Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak. Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.

The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward others’ stare at you that way. Eyes do speak, right?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. - 1 -

Tips for cooking on a Tight Schedule

From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don’t cook more often: ability, money and time, Money is a topic I’ll save for another day. So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule:

1. Think ahead. The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when I’m already hungry

and there is nothing ready to eat. So think about of the coming week. When will you have

time to cook? Do you have the right materials ready? 2. Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and

save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread? it takes around the

same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future

meal.

3. This may surprise you, but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your

time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can

work well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try, the

more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule.

Hopefully that gives you a good start. and don’t let a busy schedule discourage

you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live!

A. Try new things.

B. Ability is easily improved.

C. Make three or four instead.

D. Understand your food better.

E. Cooking is a burden for many people.

F. Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden.

G. A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on.

One morning, I was waiting at the bus stop, worried about (be) late for school. There were many people waiting at the bus stop, some of them looked very anxious and (disappoint). When the bus finally came, we all hurried on board. I got a place next the window, so I had a good view of the sidewalk. A boy on a bike (catch ) my attention. He was riding beside the bus and waving his arms. I heard a passenger behind me shouting to the driver, but he refused (stop) until we reached the next stop. Still, the boy kept (ride). He was carrying something over his shoulder and shouting. Finally, when we came to the next stop, the boy ran up the door of the bus. I heard an excited conversation. Then the driver stood up and asked,“anyone lose a suitcase at the last stop?” A woman on the bus shouted,

“Oh, dear! It’s (I )”. She pushed her way to the driver and took the suitcase thankfully,

Five others on the bus began talking about what the boy had done and the crowd of strangers (sudden) became friendly to one another.

The summer vacation would come around soon. I am happy that I can forget about school at most for a while. In order to make the best use with this summer vacation, I have made a plan as to how to spend them. First, I think I should go over all those things my teachers taught me in the past term so that I can have better understanding of them. Then I thought I should take up some forms of exercise, such as walking, jogging and rowing, to keeping me physically strong. The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubb

ornness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap(隙)with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person's needs.

Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what maybe implied(暗示) is that the personwants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In thesecultures, silence is a call for reflection.

Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly

whendealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people withdifferent amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish personsmay use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic udnerdiscussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by aperson in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him orher. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a signof respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.

Nurses and other care-geivers need to be aware of the

possiblemeanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patientsmay be expericencing. Nurses should recognize their own

personal and culturalconstruction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted tooearly or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing(治愈) value of silence can use thisunderstanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from othercultures.

Secret codes (密码)keep messages private。Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doingbusiness, especially when information is sent by computer.

People have used secret codes for thousandsof years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading codedmessages is called cryptography.

There are three main types of cryptography. 37For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell outthe hidden message “Meet me.” ’s number the letters ofthe alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we

substitute a number for eachletter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a codebook. 39 For

example, ”bridge“ might stand for “meet” and “out” mightstand

for “me.” The message “bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.” 40However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must bechanged frequently.

A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book.

B. In any language, some letters are used more than others.

C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message.

D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E.You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out.

F.With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words.

G.Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet.
